Specialties
I provide individual Counselling for ages 16 and older to overcome challenges including the following: anxiety, depression and low mood; stress; self-esteem; anger; communication; sleep difficulties and life changes.
Anxiety
Worrying is normal and common for most people. Sometimes worrying occurs frequently and is difficult to control for things like finances, health safety, relationships or general future events.
In addition to everyday worry there are different types of anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder and phobias.  There is a significant amount of research that helps in all of these areas. We can work as a team to tackle your goal so you experience a better quality of life. I use several evidence-based modalities including, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness with a solution focused approach  to help you deal with anxiety. Understand that your thoughts are not facts and we can work together to overcome the obstacles by focusing on your abilities.
Depression and low mood
Everyone experiences periods of low moods and the sense of feeling stuck. You are not alone! I can help you discover what is creating your emotional stress and how to overcome this. I also work with you if you've been diagnosed with depression.  This is characterized by sadness, lack of energy, excessive guilt, low self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and loss of interest in pleasurable activities over a prolonged period of time. I will help you explore ways of thinking and acting, so you feel more in control. We will work on your goals and break them down into smaller, achievable steps to improve your motivation.
Stress
Stress is a normal part of our lives and we need a certain amount to feel stimulated and focused. However, when we start to experience chronic stress in our lives from work to family obligations, relationship issues, or illness - this can impact our mental health. I work with you to identify what triggers your stress, how you experience it and alter patterns of thinking and behaviours to make better choices that work best for you.
Self-esteem
Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. Our perceptions could be based on our past life experiences. We may have been bullied, discriminated against, had to deal with stressful work environments, relationship problems, body image concerns or problems with finding employment. These are just some of the reasons why our self-esteem may be low. It's important to know that whatever impacted your self-esteem, you can improve things one step at a time. We can work together to know yourself, focus on self-love and raise your self-confidence.
Anger
It's healthy to experience all our emotions, it's how we deal with the feelings of anger that can negatively impact our relationships, jobs or physical health. If angry outbursts occur often as a justification to feelings of hurt, it may be helpful to seek counselling. During therapy we can identify the patterns and learn to be mindful of our experiences. By opening up to a greater awareness of experiences within, we can compassionately discover how to move through the vulnerable emotions and gain harmony within your life.
Sleep difficulties
Sleep is an important biological process that impacts our mental, physical and emotional health. When our sleep is affected over a period of time, we may experience an increase in moodiness, irritability and lack of focus. Not only is it frustrating but it could lead to increased risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road. Cognitive Behavioural therapy for Insomnia is used to help examine feelings, thoughts and behaviours that are contributing to the symptoms of insomnia. Treatments are tailored to help break the cycle and establish new sleep habits.
Communication
Do you have difficulty telling people how you feel, stating your opinion or dealing with conflict? A lot of people have difficulties with communication. However, the consequences of some communication styles can take a toll on our relationships. If you don't feel heard, it can lead to resentment, pain and frustration. It's important to understand you're preferred communication style and how it impacts your life. Becoming more self-aware, along with experimenting with new communication styles and listening to others more intently can help improve your relationships and feel more connected and understood.
School mental health classes
I offer activity based psycho-education sessions that teach young ones in the classroom how to cope with stress, understand their emotions, communicate effectively in social settings, work on self esteem and better understand healthy relationships.Â
Each topic is covered with three in-class sessions. I use activities that reinforce positive, solution-focused outcomes in a fun, dynamic way so the students feel engaged in the learning process. Please contact me to further discuss booking options.
Mental Wellness group classes
This is a group that focuses on ways to create and sustain wellness in all its forms into our daily lives. It's not about dealing with specific personal issues as it is about creating a foundation of health with focus on the 5 pillars of health. Acknowledging our vulnerabilities, creating a roadmap for our health journey so we can live our best life.
